🌾 Choosing Faith Over Comfort

📖 Ruth 1

Let’s be honest. Following Jesus isn’t always the easiest choice.

Sometimes doing what’s right costs us something. It might mean telling the truth when a lie would protect us. It might mean staying faithful to your marriage when walking away seems easier. It could mean forgiving someone who never apologized or stepping out in faith when you have no idea how everything will work out.

Those moments don’t just reveal our decisions. They reveal our hearts. ❤️

That’s exactly where we meet Ruth.

The book of Ruth begins during one of the darkest seasons in Israel’s history. A famine forced Naomi and her family to leave Bethlehem and move to the land of Moab in search of a better life. 🌵

Instead of finding security, they experienced heartbreaking loss. Naomi lost her husband and both of her sons, leaving her wondering if she had anything left.

Then she heard that the Lord had once again provided bread in Bethlehem. 🌾

As Naomi started the journey home, Ruth faced a life-changing decision. She could stay where life seemed safer and more comfortable, or she could follow Naomi into an uncertain future.

She chose faith over comfort.

🚶 Real Faith Returns to God

Naomi’s journey back to Bethlehem reminds us that faith often begins with one simple step. It begins by turning back to God.

It’s so easy to drift. Busyness, disappointment, distractions, and even success can slowly pull us away from the Lord. But the wonderful news is that God never stops inviting us back.

Long before Naomi started walking toward Bethlehem, God was already at work preparing the way.

Maybe you’ve allowed some distance to grow between you and the Lord. The first step back doesn’t have to be complicated. It simply begins with saying “yes” to Him again.

🤝 Real Faith Remains Committed

Naomi encouraged Ruth to return to Moab where life would probably be easier.

From a human perspective, it made perfect sense.

But Ruth made a different choice.

She declared,

“Whither thou goest, I will go… thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.”

Those aren’t just beautiful words. They’re the words of someone whose faith had become her identity.

Loyalty isn’t proven when everything is going well.

It’s proven when walking away would be easier.

Whether it’s your marriage, your family, your church, your ministry, or your walk with Christ, genuine faith keeps showing up, even when it’s hard. 💙

🌱 Real Faith Trusts God Before It Sees the Outcome

When Naomi arrived back in Bethlehem, she felt empty.

She couldn’t see what God was doing.

But God wasn’t finished.

The chapter closes by mentioning that they arrived “in the beginning of barley harvest.” At first, it sounds like an ordinary detail.

It wasn’t.

That harvest would lead Ruth to Boaz.

Boaz would become her redeemer.

Their family would eventually produce King David, and generations later, Jesus Christ Himself. ✝️

God was writing a story that Naomi couldn’t yet see.

And often, He’s doing the same in our lives.

Sometimes God is accomplishing His greatest work beneath the surface while all we can see is today’s struggle.

❤️ What About You?

Sooner or later, every one of us will stand at a crossroads where comfort points one direction and faith points another.

When that moment comes, ask yourself one simple question:

“Which choice best demonstrates my loyalty to Christ?”

Then trust Him enough to take that next step.

It may not be the easiest road.

But it’s always the best one.

✝️ The Greatest Choice You’ll Ever Make

Ruth’s story ultimately points us to an even greater Redeemer.

Through Ruth’s family line came Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so that everyone who trusts in Him can receive forgiveness and eternal life.

The greatest decision you’ll ever make isn’t where you’ll live, what career you’ll pursue, or how comfortable your life will be.

It’s whether you’ll place your faith in Jesus Christ.

If you’ve never trusted Him as your Savior, we’d love the opportunity to show you from God’s Word how you can know Him personally.

🙏 We’d love for you to join us this Sunday as we continue our Built to Last: Faith in Real Life series. Come discover how God uses ordinary acts of faithful obedience to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
