Watch and Be Ready

Mark 13:24–37
We all know what it feels like to be caught off guard. 😳
Maybe your boss came back from a trip way earlier than expected.
Maybe your teacher walked back into the classroom before anybody was ready.
Maybe as a kid you heard the front door open before the toys were picked up.
In that split second your heart jumps. “I should have been ready… but I wasn’t.”
Not because you were doing something terrible. You were simply surprised.
Jesus uses that very human feeling to teach us something far bigger.
His return will be glorious, unmistakable, and completely unpredictable.
And because none of us knows when that moment will be, His people must live with constant spiritual wakefulness.
Jesus is not trying to satisfy our curiosity about the future.
He is trying to shape our character right now.
This is not fear-driven readiness.
It is faith-filled readiness.
1. His Return Will Be Unmistakable in Its Glory (Mark 13:24–27)✨
Jesus describes a moment the world will not be able to ignore.
- The sun goes dark.
- The moon stops shining.
- The stars fall.
- The heavens shake.
This language echoes the prophets who described times when God stepped directly into history.
Then Jesus says:
“They shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.”
This is Daniel 7 language, where the divine Son of Man receives authority from the Ancient of Days. 🌤️
When Jesus returns, it will not be quiet or hidden.
It will be global and glorious.
Think of a sunrise. You cannot stop it, control it, or hide from it. Everyone sees it.
That is how Jesus describes His return.
2. His Word Is More Certain Than the World (Mark 13:28–31)📖
Jesus turns to a simple example, a fig tree.
When its branches soften and leaves appear, everyone knows summer is close.
In the same way, He calls us to pay attention to the spiritual seasons around us.
Then He makes one of the most comforting statements in Scripture:
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
Everything we treat as stable, including governments, systems, and even nature, is temporary.
But the words of Jesus stand firm forever. 🔒
We can trust His Word more than our predictions, our plans, or our assumptions about the future.
3. The Timing Is Hidden, So Watchfulness Must Be Constant (Mark 13:32–37)⏳
Jesus says plainly that no one knows the moment.
Not angels.
Not the Son during His earthly ministry.
Only the Father.
Because the timing is hidden, Jesus repeats the same command:
- Be on guard.
- Stay awake.
- Keep watch.
He tells a story about a master who travels far away and leaves his servants meaningful work to do. They do not know whether he will return at evening, midnight, rooster crow, or dawn, the most unpredictable hours of the night.
The real question is not when the master returns.
The real question is what condition the servants will be in when he does.
It is like a fire alarm. It never waits for a convenient moment. 🔥
You do not start preparing after it sounds.
You are supposed to be ready before it rings.
4. What Watchfulness Looks Like Today (Mark 13:37) 👀
Jesus leaves us with a command that speaks to every believer in every generation:
“What I say to you I say to all, Watch.”
Watchfulness is not sky-gazing.
It is a lifestyle of:
- Quick repentance
- Steady obedience
- Consistent prayer
- Faithful witness
- Holy living
- A heart that refuses to drift
It means living today as if Jesus could return today, not out of fear, but out of love and honor for the King. ❤️
Think of soldiers who keep their barracks in order because the commanding officer could walk in at any moment. Their readiness shows respect, not panic.
That is the spirit Jesus calls us to.
So What Does This Mean for Us? 🤔
Mark 13 does not end with a timeline.
It ends with a command.
Jesus does not want charts or countdowns.
He wants awake hearts.
His coming will be cosmic.
His coming will be glorious.
His coming will be unmistakable.
And His coming will be unscheduled.
That truth is not meant to make us anxious.
It is meant to make us faithful.
So here is the question:
👉 If Jesus returned this afternoon, would He find you awake or drifting? Focused or distracted? Faithful or spiritually drowsy?
Readiness starts with the small, daily choices that keep your heart alive to Him.
Now is the time to prepare, not when the alarm sounds.
A Final Word of Hope 🌅
No matter where you are spiritually today, Jesus’ call is the same:
Stay awake.
Stay faithful.
Stay ready.
And if you have never trusted Christ, readiness begins by turning to Him. The One who will return in glory is the same One who went to the cross in love. He died for your sins, rose again in power, and invites you to receive Him today.
Put your trust in Him and He will forgive you, save you, and make you ready for the day He comes.
What He says to all, He says to you:
Watch. 👀
