📖 John 10:27–30

Many sincere Christians wrestle with a question they do not always feel comfortable saying out loud.

Can I really know that I am secure with God?

Some days their faith feels strong. Other days doubts creep in. Their assurance rises and falls with their emotions, their failures, or whatever circumstances life throws their way.

If we are honest, most believers have felt that tension at one time or another.

Into that uncertainty, Jesus speaks with incredible clarity. ✨

In John 10, Jesus describes His sheep and gives one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture about the security of those who belong to Him.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
I and my Father are one.”
John 10:27–30 (KJV)

In these verses, Jesus explains how you can know that you belong to Him and why those who belong to Him are secure forever.

The message is simple but powerful.

👉 Those who truly belong to Jesus are eternally secure because He gives them life and holds them safely in the united power of the Father and the Son.

Let us look at three truths Jesus reveals about the security of His sheep.

1️⃣ Christ’s Sheep Hear His Voice and Follow Him

Jesus begins by describing the people who truly belong to Him.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

The word hear means more than simply noticing a sound. In the Bible it often means listening with a responsive heart. Christ’s sheep do not just hear His words. They receive them.

Paul says it this way.

“Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Romans 10:17

In the ancient world, shepherds did not drive sheep from behind like cattle. Instead, they called their sheep, and the sheep learned to recognize their shepherd’s voice. 🐑

They trusted that voice because it belonged to the one who cared for them.

In the same way, Christ’s people learn to recognize His voice through His Word.

Jesus also says, “I know them.” This speaks of personal relationship. Christ’s sheep are not anonymous members of a crowd. They are personally known by Him. ❤️

Then Jesus says, “they follow me.”

To follow someone means to walk behind them as a disciple. Christ’s sheep do not follow Him perfectly, but they follow Him sincerely. Their lives begin to move in the direction He leads.

The real question is not whether we occasionally hear God’s Word.

The real question is this.

👉 Is Christ’s voice shaping the direction of your life?

2️⃣ Christ’s Sheep Are Secure in His Hand

Jesus then explains why those who belong to Him never need to fear losing the life He gives.

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

Notice the words “I give.”

Eternal life is not something we earn. It is something Christ gives. 🎁

Paul says it clearly.

“The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23

Jesus also says His sheep “shall never perish.”

That means Christ does not give temporary life or fragile life.

He gives eternal life.

Then He adds another powerful promise.

“Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

The word pluck means to seize or snatch away by force.

Jesus is saying that no one has the power to take His sheep out of His hand. ✋

Many believers quietly live as if their security depends on how tightly they hold on to Christ.

But Jesus says our security rests not in our grip on Him, but in His grip on us.

Think of a parent holding a small child while crossing a busy street. 👨‍👧

The child’s safety does not depend on how strong the child is. It depends on the strength of the parent holding on.

Our salvation works the same way.

We are safe because Christ is holding us.

3️⃣ Christ’s Sheep Are Protected by the Father

Jesus strengthens the promise even further.

“My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Jesus says the Father Himself gave the sheep to the Son.

Believers are not an accident or an afterthought. They are part of God’s plan from the beginning. 🙌

Then Jesus makes this powerful statement.

“My Father… is greater than all.”

There is no power in heaven, on earth, or in hell that can overcome Him.

Then Jesus repeats the promise again.

No one can take the sheep from the Father’s hand.

So believers are held in:

The Son’s hand

The Father’s hand

Then Jesus explains why this promise is so certain.

“I and my Father are one.”

The Father and the Son are perfectly united in their power and purpose.

Because of that unity, the security of Christ’s sheep cannot fail.

The Shepherd Who Never Lets Go

In 1859, a famous tightrope walker named Charles Blondin performed one of the most daring feats in history by crossing Niagara Falls on a tightrope. 🌊

Thousands watched as he walked back and forth across the roaring water below.

At one point he pushed a wheelbarrow across the rope and asked the crowd if they believed he could carry a person across.

The crowd cheered.

Then Blondin asked for a volunteer.

At first no one moved.

Finally, his manager climbed onto his back.

As Blondin carefully walked across the rope, the man holding onto him was not trusting his own balance to survive the crossing. His safety depended entirely on the strength and stability of the man carrying him.

That is a powerful picture of what Jesus describes in John 10.

Our security does not come from how steady we are.

It does not come from how tightly we hold on.

It comes from the One who holds us. 🤝

Christ’s sheep are safe because they are carried by the Shepherd who never loses His footing and never lets go.

The Question We Must Answer

So the question each of us must answer is this.

Am I truly one of Christ’s sheep?

The promise of security in this passage is not given to everyone in general.

It is given to those who hear His voice and follow Him.

If you belong to the Shepherd, you can live with confidence. The One who called you, gave you life, and holds you in His hand will never let you go. 🙏

But if you have never truly come to Him, today is the day to respond to His voice.

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus came to rescue lost sheep.

The Bible tells us that all of us have wandered from God because of our sin. We cannot save ourselves or secure our own future with God.

But Jesus, the Good Shepherd, laid down His life for the sheep when He died on the cross and rose again so that sinners could be forgiven and receive eternal life. ✝️

If you will turn from your sin and place your faith in Jesus Christ, He promises to give you that life.

And when you come to Him, you will discover the wonderful truth of this passage.

Those who belong to Christ are held securely by the Son and guarded by the Father.
