Pass Your Faith Forward 🌱

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”
—2 Timothy 1:5

Whether we realize it or not, we are all passing something forward.

The people around us notice how we live, what matters to us, and where we turn when life gets hard. They may not remember every lesson we teach or every word we say, but they will remember what they saw in us.

We can leave our children our name, our possessions, and our favorite family traditions. Those things can be meaningful, but nothing we leave behind is more valuable than a genuine faith in Jesus Christ. 🙏

The question is not whether our lives will influence someone. They will.

The real question is: Will our influence help someone follow Jesus?

A Faith Worth Sharing ❤️

Paul met Timothy in Lystra, took him under his wing, and watched him grow into a faithful servant of Christ. Over the years, their relationship became much more than a ministry partnership. Paul loved Timothy like a son.

By the time Paul wrote 2 Timothy, he was in prison and knew his earthly life was coming to an end. This would be his final letter. As he thought about Timothy, Paul remembered the people God had used to shape this young man’s life.

He especially remembered Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice.

Their faith had made a lasting impression on Timothy. It was not fake, forced, or reserved for special occasions. It was sincere. Eventually, that same kind of faith became Timothy’s own.

Their story reminds us that God often uses the sincere faith of one generation to shape the next. 🌱

Keep Jesus at the Center ✝️

Paul begins his letter by calling himself “an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God.” Paul had not chosen this calling because it sounded impressive or fit his personal ambitions. God had called him.

That reminds us that sincere faith begins with God—not with us.

Paul then writes about “the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus.” Those words carry special weight when we remember where Paul was. He was sitting in prison, and death was drawing near. Yet one of the first things he wrote about was life.

Paul understood that death could end his earthly ministry, but it could never cancel God’s promise. His life was secure because it was found in Christ.

That is the kind of faith worth passing forward.

Christianity is more than keeping a family tradition, attending church, or owning a Bible. Eternal life is found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Imagine being given an old family Bible. Its worn cover, handwritten notes, and recorded family names make it precious. But simply owning that Bible does not give you the faith of the people whose names are written inside it. Its greatest value is that it points you to the Christ revealed in its pages. 📖

We must pass down more than Christian belongings and family customs. We must point people to Jesus.

Paul also greets Timothy with three beautiful words: grace, mercy, and peace.

We do not remain faithful through willpower alone. God gives us the grace, mercy, and peace we need to continue. The faith we pass forward is a faith that God begins, Christ gives life to, and grace sustains.

So here is a question worth considering:

Are the people watching you being pointed toward a living relationship with Christ, or are they only learning your religious habits?

We cannot pass forward a living faith unless we are continually drawing our own life from Jesus.

Bring People Close 🤝

Paul called Timothy his “dearly beloved son.” Timothy was not Paul’s biological child, but Paul loved him like family.

Their relationship had been built through years of serving together, enduring hardships, having conversations, and sharing life. Paul did not simply give Timothy information about ministry. He invited Timothy into his life.

Passing our faith forward requires that kind of closeness.

People need more than someone who will tell them what to believe. They need someone who will show them how faith works in real life.

Think about teaching a child to ride a bicycle. 🚲 You cannot simply hand them an instruction manual and watch from the porch. You have to run beside them. You steady the bicycle, encourage them when they wobble, and help them up when they fall.

Eventually, you let go. But before they learn to ride alone, they learn that you are there.

Passing our faith forward works much the same way. We must come alongside people and walk with them.

Pray for People by Name 🙏

Paul told Timothy:

“Without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day.”

Timothy was a regular part of Paul’s prayer life. Paul kept bringing Timothy’s name, needs, struggles, and ministry before God.

If we want to pass our faith forward, we must do more than talk to people about God. We must talk to God about people.

Paul also remembered Timothy’s tears. Scripture does not tell us what caused those tears, but that is not the main point. The important thing is that Paul remembered them.

Timothy’s pain mattered to him.

This was not a cold or professional mentoring relationship. Paul cared about Timothy’s heart. He entered his sorrow, carried him in prayer, and looked forward to the joy of seeing him again.

Faith is often passed forward most powerfully through relationships in which people know they are genuinely loved. ❤️

Ask yourself:

• Who is close enough to receive my spiritual encouragement?
• Whose name regularly appears in my prayers?
• Who knows that I genuinely care about their struggles?

Spiritual influence rarely happens through good intentions alone. It grows through intentional relationships.

Let Them See the Real You 🏠

Paul described Timothy’s faith as “unfeigned.” That means it was sincere and free from hypocrisy.

The next generation can usually tell the difference between faith that is performed and faith that is real. They do not expect us to be perfect, but they do need to see that our faith is genuine.

We cannot pass forward what we are only pretending to possess.

Paul said this sincere faith first “dwelt” in Lois and Eunice. Their faith was not an occasional visitor. It lived in them.

Their faith could be seen in ordinary life—around the table, during difficult seasons, and in the everyday routines of home.

Faith is passed forward when it lives at home, not merely when it appears at church. The people closest to us should not see an entirely different version of us from the one everyone sees on Sunday.

Timothy had known the Scriptures from childhood. His mother and grandmother taught him God’s Word, but they also allowed him to see that truth lived out in their lives.

Think about a family recipe passed down from one generation to another. 🥣 The written recipe may preserve the ingredients, but some lessons can only be learned by standing in the kitchen with someone who has prepared the dish for years.

You watch how they mix it. You notice the small adjustments they make. You learn how they know when it is ready.

In the same way, younger believers need the truth of Scripture, but they also need to watch someone live that truth.

They need to see how faith shapes our decisions, relationships, priorities, and responses when life becomes difficult.

Faith Must Become Personal 🌿

There is a beautiful progression in 2 Timothy 1:5:

Lois → Eunice → Timothy

Sincere faith lived in Timothy’s grandmother. It lived in his mother. Eventually, Paul became convinced that it lived in Timothy too.

But Timothy did not automatically inherit their relationship with God.

Lois and Eunice could teach him Scripture, pray for him, model sincere faith, and point him toward Christ. But eventually, Timothy had to trust Christ for himself.

Our children may inherit our name, our appearance, and even some of our habits. But they cannot inherit our personal relationship with Jesus.

Every person in every generation must respond to the gospel for themselves.

We cannot believe for someone else. But we can teach them God’s Word, pray for them faithfully, show them what dependence on Christ looks like, and keep pointing them toward Jesus.

Who Is Next? 🏃

Picture a runner carrying a baton in a relay race. The baton was never meant to remain in one runner’s hand. One runner receives it, carries it faithfully, and places it within reach of the next.

Saving faith cannot simply be handed from one person to another. Each individual must personally place their faith in Christ.

But we can pass forward the truth we have learned, the example we have lived, and the testimony of God’s faithfulness we have experienced.

So let me leave you with one simple question:

Who is next?

Who is close enough to see your faith?

Who are you intentionally encouraging?

Whose name are you bringing before God in prayer?

Who is hearing from you about the goodness and faithfulness of Jesus?

You do not have to be a pastor, teacher, or perfect Christian to influence someone spiritually. You simply need a sincere faith, a willing heart, and the courage to invite someone into your life.

Keep Jesus at the center. ✝️
Invest in someone you love. ❤️
Live your faith where they can see it. 🏠
Pray for them by name. 🙏
